100th Airline by the Republic’s Centenary

During an exclusive interview on the sidelines of the bustling Routes World event, Selahattin Bilgen, the newly appointed CEO of İGA Istanbul Airport, unveiled an ambitious plan to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Turkish Republic. The plan aims to mark this historic milestone by welcoming the 100th airline to Istanbul Airport, one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation hubs.

100th Airline by the Republic's Centenary 27 Nisan 2024

Istanbul Airport has been on a remarkable growth trajectory, consistently enhancing its global connectivity. It currently holds the top position in Europe’s ACI EUROPE Airport Industry Connectivity Report under the category of “Direct Connectivity.” The airport’s strategy includes diversifying its airline portfolio, with a particular focus on attracting low-cost carriers (LCCs), while maintaining its support for Turkish Airlines. This approach is pivotal to expanding its connectivity and further bolstering the Turkish economy.

While the 100th airline milestone is an ambitious goal, Istanbul Airport has a track record of turning such aspirations into reality. The Turkish aviation sector’s dynamism and the airport’s “yes, we can” attitude were evident throughout the interview, reflecting the nation’s unwavering commitment to progress.

As part of their future plans, Istanbul Airport is also set to raise the bar concerning sustainability, with more details on this front expected to be unveiled in the coming months. This initiative aligns with the airport’s broader vision to be at the forefront of the global aviation industry while contributing to a more sustainable and connected world.

As the Turkish Republic prepares to celebrate its 100th year, Istanbul Airport’s ambitious target symbolizes its dedication to shaping the future of aviation and maintaining its status as a vital global transport and connectivity hub.

Mehmet Kali

Hello everyone. My name is Mehmet Kali. In the industry, I am known as "Kali". I graduated from the first civil aviation training school in Turkey, which was known as the Civil Aviation School at the time and is now Eskişehir Technical University, in 1991. As I graduated from the Business Administration department, it was a bit challenging for me to integrate into the industry. I have worked for companies such as SultanAir, DHMI, Havaş, and Swissair, and currently, I provide services and consultancy in air cargo transportation. I have experience in dispatching, air traffic control, passenger services, and aircraft coordination. During my time at Swissair, I had the opportunity to experience aviation training in many countries. Since 2012, I have been focusing on air cargo transportation. For three years, I taught courses on air cargo at Nişantaşı University. I still hold valid IATA certifications related to both passenger and cargo operations. For over ten years, I have been managing aeroportist.com, a news website related to aviation, which initially started as a hobby. I enjoy building aviation networks and sharing knowledge. If there is anything I can contribute to, I am here. Best regards "kali"
